چکیده

Three different techniques of harvesting microalgae from four pilot scale (125 m 2) and two demonstration ponds (1200 m 2) have been investigated. The processes included centrifugation, chemical flocculation followed by flotation and continuous filtration with a fine-weave belt filter. None of these processes was completely satisfactory. Centrifugation gave good recovery and a thickened slurry, but required high capital investment and energy inputs. Dissolved air flotation was more economical, but, if the recovered algae were to be incorporated into animal feed, the use of flocculants such as alum could have undesirable effects on the growth rate of the animals. This problem could be overcome by the use of non-toxic flocculants. The continuous filtration process had significant advantages in energy efficiency, economics and chemical-free operation. The only drawback of this process was that the efficiency depended on the size and morphology of the algae. * To whom all correspondence should be addressed. 51 Biomass 0144-4565/88/S03.50 © 1988 Elsevier Applied Science Publishers Ltd, England. Improved algal harvesting using suspended air flotation.

Current methods to remove algae from a liquid medium are energy intensive and expensive. This study characterized algae contained within a wastewater oxidation pond and sought to identify a more efficient harvesting technique. Analysis of oxidation pond wastewater revealed that algae, consisting primarily of Chlorella and Scenedesmus, composed approximately 80% of the solids inventory during th...

The impacts of replacing air bubbles with microspheres for the clarification of algae from low cell-density culture.

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is a well-known coagulation-flotation system applied at large scale for microalgae harvesting. Compared to conventional harvesting technologies DAF allows high cell recovery at lower energy demand. By replacing microbubbles with microspheres, the innovative Ballasted Dissolved Air Flotation (BDAF) technique has been reported to achieve the same algae cell removal e...

Comparison of Dissolved Air Flotation Process for Aniline and Penicillin G Removal From Aqueous Solutions

Introduction: The presence of antibiotics due to toxicity and sustainability as well as organic compounds as a combination of hard biodegradable wastewater is an undesirable issue in many industries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of dissolved air flotation process for aniline and penicillin G removal from aqueous solutions. Methods: This was an empirical-lab study to w...

Modeling and optimization of oil refinery wastewater chemical oxygen demand removal in dissolved air flotation system by response surface methodology

In this present study the dissolved air flotation (DAF) system was investigated for the treatment of Kermanshah Oil Refinery wastewater. The effect of three parameters on flotation efficiency including of flow rate (outflow from the flotation tank), saturation pressure and coagulant dosage on chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was examined experimentally. All the experiments were done under a...

Influence of growth phase on harvesting of Chlorella zofingiensis by dissolved air flotation.

The effects of changes in cellular characteristics and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on dissolved air flotation (DAF) harvesting of Chlorella zofingiensis at the different growth phases were studied. Harvesting efficiency increased with Al(3+) dosage and reached more than 90%, regardless of growth phases. In the absence of DOM, the ratio of Al(3+) dosage to surface functional group concentrati...
